The real price of free soda to your company
via VentureBeat ““Do you know how much our company is spending on free sodas and snacks?” And to answer her own question she presented the spreadsheet totaling it all up. There were some experienced VC’s in the room and I was waiting for them to “educate” her about startup culture. But my jaw dropped when the board agreed that the “free stuff” had to go. “We’re too big for that now” was...

How to be an Iconoclast
While Chris Morley’s comment wasn’t meant to be advice on how to be an iconoclast, it is.  Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.     Christopher Morley     US author & journalist (1890 - 1957)

Visions of Post Apocalyptica
via bldgblog.blogspot.com via bldgblog.blogspot.com I love post apocalyptic fiction. I love books that hypothesize how the civilization as we know it will end and what will come next. I read The Road last year and am interested to see how they pull it off as a movie. These pictures have nothing to do with that except they spark that same line of imagination in me.

via GigaOm “Soon It Will Be Cheaper to Compute Than to Cache” As storage gets cheaper, bandwidth gets better, browsers get faster and computers become more efficient it becomes necessary to store duplicate versions of data (in this case video) in different formats or versions. Basically extending this line of thinking all content will be stored in a common “raw” format,...

Sometimes I call fax machines to listen to that...
Sometime when I’m feeling nostalgic for the “good old days” of the Web I call fax machines to listen to that harmonic screeching.  It reminds me of my old dial up modems. Why did they ever make those things so loud? What was the point. I bet if they made dial up modems with ring back technology (that’s the music you get when you call some 20 somethings cell phone...

The Power of Focused Data: Google Analytics...
via blog.searchenginewatch.com While most enginerds get really excited about the mountains of data flowing freely across the Web what excites me the most is the the poser of focused data. Data focused on a user or a specific site or even a specific segment is where I think the real interesting stuff is.
