Several companies in developing countries are building their own branded products from Google’s open source products like Android and Chrome.
I wonder if Google sees this as a good thing. Like how Microsoft tolerated pirated software in developing nations because at least they were using their product? While they’re not directly benefiting from it, it does keep the money out of the hands of Microsoft and other competitors and could make it easier to acquire those companies later or convert the customers since they’re already used to the product.
The problem Microsoft has run into and Google could fall afoul of as well, is that the user experience is not controlled and ends up being worse than the real product, which turns users off over time.
