The future is already here, I'm just trying to aggregate it.

Facebook Continues To Attack Twitter With “Trending Articles”

I logged into Facebook (like I do multiple times an hour a day) and noticed this trending articles widget, thing in my feed. I’m used to the featured articles that multiple of my friends are sharing but this is different because, as you can see from the image, “0 People Read This”.

I imagine this is A) Facebook’s efforts to prove their value to publishers and brands as a way of driving their ad revenue and B) trending articles across all of Facebook and that it just means none of my friends have read it.

In my mind this is an obvious attack at Twitter and their dominance as a news source. I wonder if Twitter will soon pull the capability to post your tweets to Facebook like they did with LinkedIn. Doubt it, because Twitter is probably hoping Facebook user will be drawn to Twitter through those cross posts - somehow.

Apparently Twitter is nervous about Tumblr.

Rooky Twitter Mistake

A few years ago (I forget when exactly) Twitter changed the way you see tweets. You only see tweets from the people you follow or from people who mention your name in the tweet. What you don’t see any more are people you do follow talking with people you don’t follow. This was set up to make Twitter a little less noisy and prevent the scenario where you’re only seeing one side of a conversation that probably isn’t relevant to you anyway.

Unless you’ve been on Twitter since they made the change you may not realize this.

This BuzzFeed article does a good job making fun of some people pointing out some examples of where this goes wrong.

You Don’t Have To Know How To Use Twitter To Be A Social Media Guru http://ow.ly/bxMXZ

The (correct) advice given is if you have to start a tweet with a username, put a . at the beginning, like “@tacanderson is awesome.” Or you could just start talking like Yoda, “Awesome @tacanderson is.” :)

Big props for the pic to @apelad and his awesome alt-Twitter logos
