I love seeing video entertainment disruption like this. This space has a really long way to go to break down the big networks but I think it’s going to take a lot of niche channels to disrupt the big guys.
What happens when a creator uses a highly-anticipated web series to launch a new website? The creators of Video Game High School found out when the highly-anticipated web series debuted on Rocket Jump — bringing millions of views to a platform they fully controlled.
This is a really good move by YouTube. I also think it will provide a lot of hilarious applications as well. Look for a new face blurring meme in the coming weeks.
Now who has the tool that identifies the influencers and next up-and-comers?
I like Instagram. I even like what Path is doing with video, but if I’m honest I don’t watch many of the videos people post on Path. It’s mostly used by parents posting videos of their kids doing something they think is really cute. I’m a parent, so I get it but I also get that it’s usually only cute to you and not everyone else.
Similarly for people with cats, not every video of a cat freaking out is funny. Most of them aren’t. And that video of your friend being stupid/drunk isn’t really funny either. Yes YouTube is filled with these videos and some of them are hilarious but most of them aren’t. It’s just that there are so many of them a few are bound to be humorous.
Instagram for video is inevitable. I’m just not sure I’ll be using it.
